The Rev'd Benjamin Newland
Chaplain (Captain) Benjamin J. Newland is a native of the Pacific Northwest, born and raised in the Tri-Cities in South-Eastern Washington State. He is a graduate of Richland High School.
Father Newland holds an Associate of Arts Degree from Columbia Basin Community College in Pasco, Washington; a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a Major in Religious Studies and a Minor in Psychology from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington; and a Master of Divinity Degree from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California.
He was ordained in the Episcopal Church on 24 June 2000. He served as Associate Priest at Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kansas City, Missouri from 2000 through 2005. His second call was to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Madison, Connecticut from 2006 through 2007. Father served as Rector of Christ Episcopal Church of Puyallup in Puyallup, Washington from 2007 through 2014. His final full-time church call was to St. John’s Episcopal Church in Boulder, Colorado where he served as Associate Priest for Family Ministry from 2014 through 2016.
Father Newland volunteered for the U.S. Army Reserve and was commissioned on 26 June 2011. He served as BDE Chaplain in the 191st Infantry Brigade at Joint Base Lewis-McChord from 2011 through 2014. His next assignment was to the 244th Engineer Battalion in Denver, Colorado from 2014 through 2015. He then served as the OIC of the 93rd Chaplain Detachment located in Denver, Colorado from 2015 through 2016. On 15 August 2016 he joined the Active Duty Army and serves with the 8th Special Troops Battalion at Fort Shafter, Hawaii.
Father Newland is a graduate of the Chaplain Basic Officer Leadership Course and the Chaplain Captain’s Career Course, and he lives in Waikiki with his wife, Jieun Kim Newland, a professional musician. Father celebrates the noonday mass most Mondays at St. Mark's, and he enjoys assisting with the high masses on high holy days.
