Sicily, Rome, and Assisi

April 7-19, 2026

Christianity came to Rome in the 40s A.D. and its spread was inspired by the Apostles Peter and Paul, who were martyred there under the Roman emperor Nero. According to the Acts of the Apostles, Paul arrived in Rome via the Appian way. It is believed that both Peter and Paul were incarcerated in the Mamertine prison before being executed on the same day: Peter being crucified upside down and Paul being beheaded. The place of St. Paul’s martyrdom was called then Acquae Salviae, “The Abbey of the Three Fountains,” and the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls was built over his tomb.

Join the Rector, Father Paul Lillie, and other pilgrims as we follow the footsteps of Saints Peter and Paul, visiting sites associated with the Apostles, discovering the earliest places of worship and martyrdom, as well as the early catacombs. This pilgrimage is sponsored by the Emmaus Center for Biblical Teaching under the direction of Dr. Randall Furushima, Senior Warden of St. Mark’s. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is the pilgrimage host, and Father Paul Lillie is the religious leader. Our travel agency is Nativity Pilgrimages.

The pilgrimage is fully booked, but there may be availability in the event of individual pilgrim cancellations. Speak with Father Lillie for further information.
