28 AUGUST 2025
For the past few days the clergy of the diocese gathered in Hilo for the annual clergy conference. It was a wonderful time to reconnect with colleagues, while enjoying presentations, worship, and informal conversations. This year the main topic of conversation was the upcoming bishop’s election next May. It is always a blessing to step away for a few days of intentional study and rest. That being said, we were all greatly shocked and saddened to hear the news from Minneapolis, and we continue to lament the tragedies in Ukraine and Gaza. It is easy to feel hopeless in the midst of so much heartache.
I know that many of you are dealing with personal challenges, whether with work, health, or families, and the subsequent stress is pushing limits. So much of life is beyond our control, but thankfully we can rely on our faith to strengthen us. God ensures that we are not alone in our challenges.
This Sunday after High Mass we are having a potluck. This will be a time for you to sit down, relax, and enjoy a meal with your fellow parishioners. You can share your stories, thoughts, and concerns as you feel comfortable, learning from one another. Your faith will connect you as you minister to each other. God will shepherd your discussions, and there is no agenda for the potluck. At the clergy conference the most valuable aspect is when clergy make the space to have conversations with other colleagues. Do not underestimate how conversation is a most excellent form of ministry within the Church. Also, please remember that your prayers, concerns, and challenges are offered up daily to God at the weekday masses.
