From the Rector: Fall Study Opportunities

17 July 2025

This fall St. Mark's will host two studies that will be conducted online. The first study, named Colloquy Online, spans the year, meeting once every two months on Wednesdays. Each session will focus on a single book, with the year covering many theological topics from a diversity of authors. The first online gathering is on Wednesday, September 10, at 7:00 pm, and the focus is the Nicene Creed, as we are celebrating the 1700th anniversary of this creed during 2025. Dates and texts for the Colloquy have been selected and are posted on the website. Our senior warden, Dr. Randy Furushima, is the mastermind of this study, and I highly recommend it.

The second study is a Bible Study on the Gospel of Saint Luke that will begin in October and meet weekly. We are currently hearing Luke's Gospel at the Sunday masses, and the hope is that participants may expand their knowledge of this Gospel as they hear and ponder the Sunday homilies. This study will meet mostly online on Tuesdays at 7:00 pm, however the first and the last sessions will be in-person gatherings on Sunday afternoons at 1:00 pm. Information regarding the in-person and online schedule is on the website.

Whereas the Colloquy will require the reading of a book every two months, the Bible Study will not require much reading except for Scripture. For both offerings, almost all of the gatherings are online in order to facilitate attendance and participation, especially for those with children, as well as those who live far from the church. Please note that the Bible Study occurs mostly during October, when there is not a colloquy. Friends from other Episcopal churches will be joining us for these studies, and we look forward to welcoming them.

The first September colloquy on the Nicene Creed is less than two months away, as summer always finishes quickly. Please mark your calendars, and join us online as we explore this foundational text of our faith, often called the love song of the Church.
