Candlemas

A Light to the Gentiles

On the fortieth day after Christmas we celebrate the Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Temple, when Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem, and the Holy Family was greeted by Anna and Simeon. During the Gospel reading we hear Simeon greet the Lord Jesus with the beloved canticle of Vespers, "Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace." It is traditional to bless candles on this feast day, as Jesus is the "light to enlighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel." With this feast our celebrations of Christmas and the Incarnation cycle come to a conclusion, and we turn our attention to the upcoming Passion Cycle of Ash Wednesday, Lent, and Holy Week.
