From the Rector: The Advent of Christ

20 NovembeR 2024

I want to begin by thanking our Senior Warden, Dr. Randy Furushima, for the excellent Marian Talk last Sunday after High Mass. I have been amazed at the number of people who attend the forum each Sunday, for we live in a time when solid religious teaching is under-valued. This past Sunday was the third Marian Talk of the year sponsored by our Guild of the Annunciation.

Dr. Furushima shared a very professional presentation of beautifully-crafted slides, explaining how in the Jewish tradition the Queen is the mother of the King. With the life of Jesus we discover that Mary is the Queen Mother who holds a place of honor at the right of the King. Moreover, as the Queen Mother she has a unique charism of intercession regarding her son Jesus. The next Marian Talk is scheduled for Sunday, December 8, when the topic is Mary as Ever-Virgin. That Sunday is also the happy coincidence of being both the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and the Second Sunday of Advent - a rare liturgical treat.

This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King, the Feast of the Holy Sovereigns, and the Octave Day of the Feast of Dedication. This triple feast will be a superb ending to the liturgical year. We do not have a forum scheduled for this Sunday, but we will have an Aloha Hour, so come and enjoy each other’s company.

Sunday after Vespers, in addition to our regular hospitality, we will erect the Christmas trees in the Parish Hall. Advent begins on Sunday, December 1, and on that day our wrapped gifts for Responsive Caregivers are due. Gifts may be placed beneath the parish hall Christmas trees. Peg Jackson, the President of the Board of Responsive Caregivers, will be with us for the Aloha Hour after High Mass on December 1, so please join us.

On the Third Sunday of Advent, December 15, the Choir will present an Advent Aloha Hour featuring holiday carols and festive treats. Some of you might remember last year’s Advent Aloha Hour with the choir when our choirmaster, Mike Dupre, unlocked the musical talent of the entire gathering.

Soon the church will announce the Christmas schedule. As for the Thanksgiving holiday, mass will be celebrated everyday at the normal times. Please join us.
