From the Rector: Keeping Advent

4 DECEMBER 2024

I want to begin by thanking everyone who provided gifts for Responsive Caregivers. Many of those who will receive the gifts are wards of the state, and your generosity will make their Christmas particularly joyful. The First Sunday of Advent always brings new energy to the church, and Sunday was no exception. We give thanks that Peg Jackson, President of the Board of Responsive Caregivers, worshipped with us and greeted us at the Aloha Hour, sharing the important work that Responsive Caregivers accomplishes.

This coming Sunday is a big Sunday. Not only is it marathon Sunday, but it is the confluence of the Second Sunday of Advent with the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. No doubt there will be traffic snarls everywhere as people are determined to come to church and worship the Lord amidst the thousands who are taking a pleasure stroll through East Honolulu. Choose your activity wisely, for your Mother Mary will be expecting your devotion. No excuses! This Sunday the Guild of the Annunciation is also hosting the next Marian Talk after High Mass, and the topic is Mary as Ever-Virgin.

As for Advent marching on amidst the commercialism of secular Christmas, Monday through Friday at 9:00 am, some of us are gathering via Zoom to pray the Morning Office. All are welcome to join us, as we soak up the Scriptures as an alternative to the holiday frenzy.

Finally, I want to thank everyone who has pledged for 2025. We are a few dollars shy of $240,000. It is not too late to pledge if you have not done so. The Vestry is grateful for everyone's generosity of time, treasure, and talent.

Blessings to you and your loved ones this Advent.
